Reviving a wilting rose

Have you ever received a beautiful bouquet of roses and within a day you have one or two roses that have started to wilt? Sometimes an air bubble forms inside the stem of the rose blocking it from being able to take up water. If your rose is not drinking water, it will soon start to wilt and die.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to revive them. First of all, remove the affected rose from its vase. Recut the stem and submerge the whole rose – stem, leaves, flowers and all – in a sink or tub of very warm water. Leave the roses submerged for 30 minutes.

While you are waiting, place your other roses in a different container and clean the vase. A little bleach in your dish water will kill any bacteria inside the vase. Refill the vase with fresh cool water and a bit of floral preservative and recut the stems of all the rose stems on a slant before placing them back into the vase. Be sure that any lower leaves do not go under the water by removing them. The rose that you had placed in warm water should be showing you that the head has straightened back up as the warm water has released the air bubble. Recut the stem on a slant, underwater if possible and place the rose back in the vase. You will have perky fresh roses to enjoy for a week or so.

Remember, flowers must drink water and roses are big water drinkers. If you received a bouquet without a vase, be sure to get them in water right away. Again, fill your vase with cool water mixed with preservative, cut the stems of the roses at an angle underwater if possible and place them into the vase right away.

Always keep your fresh cut flowers away from heat or excessive cold air. A cool area will keep them looking nice longer for you to enjoy.

To preserve your roses, take a few stems and hold them together with a rubber band. Hang each of the bundles upside down in a warm dark place to dry. You can also remove the petals and make potpourri by adding in some essential oil into the container.
