Many of our customers have come to us over the years and simply said, “I don’t like my kitchen, but there isn’t much I can do with the space. What are my options?” There are a surprising number of things that can be done to a kitchen without tearing down walls and or gutting the room.
The first thing to consider is the layout of the kitchen. If you started off with a blank canvas, would a new design look almost identical to your current layout? If it would, then consider keeping the existing cabinets boxes and “refacing” them. By this we mean applying a new skin or veneer onto the exterior of the cabinets are installing new doors, hardware, crown moulding, etc. This is one of our most popular services we offer and a great way to get a new kitchen, at a lower cost, and reduce the renovation time.
Another similar option is to “refinish” the cabinets. This requires repainting or staining the cabinets and doors. It’s labour intensive, which is great if you have the time to do it, but can be cost prohibitive if you hire it out.
With either of these options you can do new countertops and backsplash to complete the Reno. A simple design rule to follow is alternating dark and light colours. For instance, if your floors are dark, go with light cabinets and either the countertop or backsplash being dark. This will help break things up and ensure each element stands out properly.
