When Fear and Anxiety Rule

In the age we live in, many live in fear: fear of the unknown, fear of one another and fear for safety. In the past few weeks alone, we have heard numerous reports of terrorist attacks across the UK and France, where the lives of men, woman and children were tragically taken due to senseless acts of violence. Due to the actions of a few, many feel that the world is full of anxiety and insecurity.

According to the Chapman University Survey of American Fears, conducted in 2016, 60.6 % of Americans were afraid of corrupt government officials and 41% were living in fear of a terrorist attack. Few people live in peace and confidence, and this is not the way that God intended for us to live our lives.

The Word of God tells us, “God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (11 Timothy 1:17 KJV). It is God’s will for us to live lives free of fear, and instead to be empowered by Him. But how is this possible?

The Bible provides an antidote for fear: love. 1 John 4:18 (KJV) says: “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear.” Jesus Christ, the one who performed the greatest act of love by giving His life for you and I, has the power to help you overcome a life of fear. Giving one’s life to Christ, accepting His love, and living a life full of His love towards others can provide freedom from a life ruled by fear and anxiety.

Fear and anxiety breed insecurity and mistrust, but love “is patient, love is kind … it always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:4-8 NIV). What a difference! There is power in love, and this type of love is only possible through faith in Jesus Christ.

You see, when we love Him, He gives us peace, security and hope and He also puts His love for others within us. It is a supernatural love.

So the next time you hear a tragic news report, or you face fear of the unknown, or you feel ill at ease, don’t succumb to fear. Choose love. Choose to put your trust in Jesus Christ.

“Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.” Psalm 90:14 (NIV).
