Everyone has dry mouth sometimes, but if you have dry mouth most of the time, it can be uncomfortable and lead to health problems. Dry mouth can cause difficulties in tasting, chewing, swallowing and speaking, and increase dental decay and mouth infections. Sufferers often don’t realize that they have dry mouth until their saliva flow has decreased by 50 percent.  Symptoms can include: a feeling of soreness in the mouth, stickiness to the touch and cracking at the corners of the mouth, red, dry mouth, a pebbled look to the tongue, difficulty eating dry or spicy foods, food no longer tasting like it used to, difficulty speaking, waking up more often in the night, and bad breath. Denture wearers with dry mouth find that their dentures don’t stay in place.

Tips for dry mouth sufferers: Sip water or sugar free drinks often. Avoid coffee, tea and alcohol. Chew sugar free gums or candies to stimulate saliva flow. Avoid tobacco. Use a humidifier at night. Use of specially designed dry mouth products.

We recommend Biotene. Biotene products relieve Dry Mouth, and are available in toothpaste, mouthwash, spray, gel, gum, and liquid. They are specifically designed for people with Dry Mouth, and contain an enzyme & protein system that is designed to supplement saliva’s natural defenses. The mouthwashes are alcohol free, and the toothpastes contain gentle, low foaming formulas. They are 100% safe and sweetened with Xylitol.
