Folate Supplementation. The results from the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) in 2009 (surveyed 8,772 Canadian households) reported that an estimated 25% of Canadians aged 6 to 79 take a supplement containing FA. Females were significantly more likely than males to report taking a supplement that contained FA (28% versus 21%)5. The Tolerable Upper Limit for folate in Canada is 1,000 mcg of FA (combined supplement and diet) per day. A Tolerable Upper Limit for folate as 5-MTHF remains unknown.1

Periconceptional Folate Supplementation.

Folate adequacy during pregnancy, lactation and infancy is crucial for maternal, fetal and child health. A low maternal folate status has been linked to an increased risk of adverse and poor pregnancy outcomes such as congenital heart defects, oral cleft palates, NTDs, pregnancy complications including spontaneous abortions and miscarriages, preterm birth, low birth weight and slow growth rate 2,12, 13, 14.
