Bottle Depots in Alberta are regulated by the Beverage Container Management Board (BCMB). The BCMB is the Designated Operating Authority (DOA) of the Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP).  The regulation was first written in 1997 under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act and originated as a means to address litter caused by the tossing of single serve beverage containers. Today there are over 220 bottle depots in Alberta and all are required to meet certain criteria in order to retain their permits to operate.  Standards such as cleanliness, hand washing stations, POS machines and parking spots are mandatory. Inspections by the BCMB are performed periodically to ensure high standards.  Many depots are engaging in mechanization and automation to become more efficient and have enhanced their operations by integrating compaction into their process.  This adds value to the recycling process by reducing the greenhouse gases caused through transportation to recycling plants.
