How Does Early Orthodontic Treatment Make A Difference?

At Alpen Dental, we understand the value and importance of good oral hygiene and a trip to the dentist for young children to make sure that adult teeth have the room to grow. Knowing your dentist from an early age and setting a pattern of regular trips to the dentist will set your child on a path to have better oral health for the long term. At Alpen Dental, our entire staff are comfortable working with children and want to make Alpen Dental a fun place for them to visit in Red Deer. To aide in that commitment, here are a few things to consider when it comes to orthodontic treatments for your daughter or son. The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that children see an orthodontist as early as age seven. At this point the orthodontist will evaluate whether your child will need orthodontic treatment. Early treatment (also known as Phase-One) typically begins around age eight or nine (Phase-Two will begin around age 11 or older). The goal of early treatment is to correct the growth of the jaw and certain bite problems. Early treatment also helps to make room for permanent teeth to come in properly, lessening the chance of extractions in the future.

Your child may need early orthodontic treatment if they show signs of:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty chewing and/or biting;
  • Mouth breathing;
  • Your child continues sucking their thumb after age five;
  • Speech impediments;
  • Protruding teeth (the top teeth and the bottom teeth extend away from each other);
  • Teeth that don’t come together in a normal manner or even at all;
  • Shifting of the jaw when your child opens or closes their mouth (crossbites); and
  • Crowded front teeth around age 7 or 8.

Receiving early orthodontic treatment as a child can help prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult, leaving little to no chance of extraction or surgery in the future. If your child is between the ages of seven and eight and shows signs of needing orthodontics in Red Deer, remember at Alpen Dental, caring for you and your entire family is our top priority.
