Each New Year naturally brings us to reflect on the previous year, while inspiring us to dream new dreams, set new goals, and make new resolutions. January can often feel like a fresh start, and our desires for the year are often lofty and full of well meaning; yet statistics show that for varying reasons very few people follow through on the goals they set. In fact, in 2013, Forbes magazine reported that just eight per cent of people achieved their resolutions.
The most common New Year’s resolutions surround self-improvement. NBC reported the top three resolutions for 2017 were: ‘getting healthy,’ ‘getting organized,’ and ‘living life to the fullest.’ In fact, there were a total of 118, 977, 270 collective Google searches on these topics over the survey period. It is clear that many people share the desire to find solutions, to feel better about themselves and live a more fulfilling life.
The start of a new year brings us to seek a new start as well; a chance to reinvent ourselves afresh, or to create a better version of ourselves. The Bible tells us that through Christ we can experience ultimate renewal: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
While resolutions and goals are excellent tools for making plans and achieving results, true fulfillment and contentment cannot be achieved by these temporary aspirations. At the heart of it all, it is only through Christ that we will achieve complete fulfillment. He is the God of fresh starts, He’s the Master creator – just look at the world around us! He created each of us with specific desires and purposes that can only be realized through a life with Him.
Perhaps you have never considered Jesus Christ as part of your life’s direction: know that He loves you, and He has a perfect plan for your life. Through Him you will find true peace, joy, and love. Through Him you will have contentment and purpose. His promise is for you: “I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you.” – Ezekiel 26:26
This year, let the God of all creation guide your life – it will be the best resolution you’ve ever made.
