Q:    Why do I have to wear my hearing aids when I am home alone?

It is important to wear hearing aids during all waking hours (with the exception of showering, swimming, and environments where hearing protection should be used). When a person has hearing loss they are missing auditory input from the brain. Hearing aids provide the brain with this auditory input and our brain creates and reforms new neural networks. If we are only using the hearing aids when we need them than these new networks are not formed and strengthened. Low hearing aid use can also lead to auditory deprivation and can effect a person’s speech understanding ability.
