A Heavenly Motivation..

Some days, going to work can feel overwhelming. Whether we love our job, or we find it a challenge, we all have days that feel more like a struggle than others. On those days, our desire can be to just make it through the day so we can get home to our families, and to our rest. However, as Christians, our testimony speaks the loudest when we work diligently, even when we don’t feel like it.

In a generation of entitled workers, a person with dedication, loyalty and work-ethic stands out as extraordinary. We may feel justified in our frustrations: perhaps a coworker is making our tasks difficult, perhaps we have extenuating circumstances that make focusing at work a challenge, or perhaps we are feeling tired and under the weather. All of these can feel like legitimate reasons to just survive a work day, and to not give it our best. However the Bible instructs us saying “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).

In those moments, it is important to remind ourselves that everything we do has a higher purpose. While it may feel like we are working at menial tasks, in reality, we are worshiping the Lord in our actions. Colossians 3:23 says “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.” This should give us a heavenly motivation to do our best at everything we put our hand to – for it is for HIM and not for ourselves

And it is important to remember that the Lord doesn’t expect us to do this all on our own strength. On the days we are feeling overwhelmed, we can encourage ourselves with verses like Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”; and, Psalm 121:2 “My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.”

God has promised to be our strength and our help, so the next time you are struggling to do it all on your own strength – remember He cares and He is there! Through Him we have the strength to work hard and work with a good attitude. When we change our perspective and realize what we’re doing is not just earthly work, but worship unto Him, our motivations will change and our influence at our place of work becomes so much greater.
