Organ and Tissue Donation
Written by Lynett Getz RSW
With over 4,500 people in Canada now waiting for the gift of an organ to become available for an organ transplant and many more waiting for a tissue transplant, have you thought about donating your organs and or tissues? Are you aware that just 1 organ and tissue donor can save up to 8 lives and make life better for up to 75 other people?
There are various options available regarding donation of organs and tissues. You can choose to donate specific organs, become a live donor, and you can also choose to donate your body to science. The process starts with talking to your family about your wishes, and letting them know exactly what you want to happen when you pass away.
You can then access the online Organ and
Tissue Donation Registry to record your choices about organ and/or tissue donation. Another option is to visit a Registry Agent office to register, or sign the back of your personal healthcare card.
If you wish to become a living donor you can contact the Living Donor Program at Foothills Medical
Centre in Calgary, Alberta by calling 403-944-8700
Or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
