Protect the Scarlet Thread
Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee. Joshua 2:18
Joshua was camped in the Jordan valley, opposite a great city, Jericho. He was ready to cross the river and take the city with his army. Before proceeding, he sent two spies to investigate Jericho. The spies stayed at Rahab’s house, built into the city’s wall.
Jericho’s king found out about the unwanted visitors and sent soldiers to capture them. Amazingly, Rahab hid the spies and explained that the spies had already left. They escaped with a red rope out of her window. The spies promised to protect her and all her family if she would mark her house with the same red cord.
They kept their word and spared Rahab’s family when Jericho was destroyed.
It is very likely when Rahab was initially told to use a red rope as a signal of protection, that she was careful not to lose it. She probably didn’t give it to the neighborhood children as a toy. It was not tossed carelessly into a pile of dirty laundry. I’m convinced that Rahab carefully stored it in a safe place until it was time to hang it from the window as Jericho was overtaken.
What red cord in your life needs to be protected? Your decision to protect your scarlet thread can save you and your family.
