Ceilings, you don’t really notice them and almost forget that there up there until one day you look up and see that faint yellow colour or that flaw in it, suddenly its in front of you every time you walk in the room.
Ceilings are almost always textured. The reason ceilings tend not to be left smooth is because ending up with a perfectly smooth finish is very difficult. In addition, ceilings reflect light in such a manner that every little variation of a smooth surface jumps out at you. To counter this, a spray-on texture is used. The two common types of texture are “Popcorn” and “Knockdown”. Popcorn texture is a mixture of granular particles that is sprayed on after a primer sealer is applied which leaves a rough look. Knockdown texture is a mud like compound that is sprayed on after a sealer is applied, except it is wiped to a smooth top finish. Knockdown tends to be the most popular choice for the fact that is more durable and doesn’t brush off like the popcorn tends to.
