The Consequences of Tooth Loss
The most significant consequence of tooth loss is the shrinkage of bone, or resorption. Resorption takes place because the bone that the teeth are rooted within, the alveolar bone, exists only for the sake of the teeth. Bone tissues require stimulation in order to maintain it’s shape and overall health. Tooth roots provide this necessary stimulation to the jawbone. When this bone no longer holds teeth, it is not being stimulated and wherever teeth are missing, it will start to shrink. The more teeth that are missing the greater the shrinkage, and the faster it occurs. This bone loss can affect nearby healthy teeth and increase the difficulty of fitting dentures. Although the rate of bone loss is most rapid shortly following extractions, it continues long after the teeth are extracted.
Bone loss also causes changes in the shape of the facial structure, and support of the soft tissues, and resulting in the supporting muscles of the face to withdraw inward. Also, the lips lose the support of the front teeth, and the jaws pull together making it appear that the nose and chin are too close together, giving a beak-like appearance. The loss of support for the face results in an increased appearance of age and wrinkles, particularly around the mouth, as the skin bunches together where it once had support.
Implant supported dentures can help preserve bone, and prevent bone loss! The dental implants act as artificial tooth roots, and stimulate the bone in the same way natural teeth do. Bone preservation is just one of many health benefits of implant supported dentures. Implant supported dentures can dramatically improve the quality of your life…call and ask us how!
If you would like to learn more about how implant supported dentures can improve the quality of your life, or have any questions about conventional dentures or denture care please call our office for a consultation.

Custom Fit Your Smile Protection!
Besides fulfilling its first role of protecting teeth and lips, the mouth guard also reduces the intensity of forces severe enough to cause concussions, wounds in the neck and mandibular fractures which are the most frequent wounds resulting from team sports and other athletic activities.
Inserted between the teeth, the mouth guard also impedes the teeth from biting the tongue and the cheeks during impact.
A custom fit mouth guard is more effective in the prevention and reduction of wounds and the protection of the athlete’s dental structure partly because it will not be dislodged in the event of a violent shock. Custom guards allow greater flow of oxygen which can assist with increased athletic performance. Prefabricated mouth guards can reduce air intake by as much as 25% which means reduced lung capacity.
Personally fitted mouth guards are not only more comfortable, they allow near normal speaking ability for the wearer.
Hosack Denture Clinic provides expert fabrication and fitting of personalized custom fit mouth guard for sports activities. For more information about custom mouth guards, or a no cost consultation, call us today.

When was the last time you enjoyed corn on the cob? How about a juicy steak? A crisp apple? If your conventional dentures don’t allow you to enjoy these foods, perhaps you should consider implant supported dentures.
The construction of implant supported dentures is a more involved process than that of conventional dentures, but they can enhance your quality of life in so many ways. Dental implants are placed into the jawbone by a specially trained dentist where they bond to the bone, essentially becoming artificial tooth roots.
They provide a permanent and stable support for a denture to be attached to. They stimulate the jawbone and help to prevent bone loss which happens naturally when teeth are lost.
Implant supported dentures allow you to say goodbye to the slipping and sliding associated with conventional dentures, and hello again to your favorite foods. Biting and chewing will be easier, resulting in better digestion of food and and less stomach ailments. You will be able to speak and smile without the fear of your dentures dropping. Our patients speak of feeling more comfortable being out in social situations, eating at restaurants, and singing in the church choir to name a few.
If you are ready for a boost to your confidence and self esteem, call the clinic today for a no charge consultation to find out if implant dentures are right for you.

Cleaning your dentures everyday is one of the most important things you can do to help your smile keep it’s attractive appearance. Failure to clean your dentures regularly can result in the formation of plaque and staining and denture odor.
Cleaning tips:
1. Dentures can break, so fill the sink with water, then clean your dentures over the sink, in case they slip out of your hands.
2. Rinse your dentures to remove loose food particles. Use cool or warm water, never hot, as it can warp dentures.
3. Apply a denture cleaning paste to a moistened denture brush. Brush all surfaces thoroughly. Avoid using brushes with stiff bristles, as they can damage the denture material.
4. Rinse dentures under the faucet to remove cleaning paste.
5. At night, soak dentures in a cleanser (Renew) Always store dentures in water when not in your mouth – never let
them dry out as they’ll warp.
7. Brush your gums, tongue and palate with a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove plaque and stimulate circulation.
8. For a fresh clean feeling, rinse with a mouthwash several times a day.
Based on our, and patient experiences , we recommend Renew Denture Cleaner.
Renew is a professional strength denture cleanser which removes tobacco, coffee, tea, plaque, calcium, bacteria, and tartar. Renew powder is a concentrated denture cleaner with a formulation more powerful than the effervescent denture tablets and powders currently on the market. This
formulation provides superior cleaning in a shorter period of time. Renew is not sold in stores, but is available at Hosack Denture Clinic.

Did You Know?
- You should not wear loose dentures. Have them checked immediately. Loose dentures can cause excessive friction between the soft tissues and the dentures resulting in sore spots that can become infected, and over time cause damage to your ridges.
- Dentures warp if placed in hot water.
- Dentures can change shape if they dry out. When not in your mouth, cover dentures with water or a denture cleaning solution to prevent them from drying out.
- Dentures should be brushed inside and outside daily with a soft, large nylon denture brush with round ended bristles and rinsed with cold water.
- Dentures don’t last forever. Check your denture for worn teeth, cracks, etc, and visit your denturist regularily.
- Medications can affect your denture fit and wearability, so discuss this with your doctor and denturist.
