What Does a Bad Hire really cost?
Hiring for your company is a daunting task; it is both stressful and time consuming. There is also an added element of panic when you need to fill a position immediately, to ensure that your business doesn’t miss a beat. The stress of hiring only follows the stress of firing or being told “I quit” by a person that you have invested in. A bad hire does a lot more than cost your company financially, it costs you in other ways too!
For whatever reason, if a new team member doesn’t work out; staff morale can take a hit – especially if your business is a revolving door for bad hires. Who wants to be in charge of training or work along side the “new person” if they’re not sure that person is going to last? Your work environment is about the people in it and seeing people come and go is hard on those that stay.
The other cost of a bad hire is your reputation as an employer and business owner. When your customers or clients see a new face every time they walk through your door, it doesn’t evoke the feeling of trust. People question why you can’t keep staff and that makes them nervous to do business with you.
So do your Hiring Homework or let Hire Standard do it for you…and in the mean time here are some “HS Hire Tips”:
• Never hire based on emotion
• Offer a fair and competitive wage
• Have a clear job description
• You can teach skills but you can’t teach fit
• Do BACKGROUND SCREENING

Statistics Canada released its latest Labor Survey and according to the numbers, Canada has a 7.4% unemployment rate, with Alberta at just 5%.
This is valuable information when you are looking to hire for a number of reasons. First, a low unemployment rate means that you won’t see a pile of resumes for your job ads. It also means that it might take you longer to fill that position and that you have to act quickly when you do find the “one”. In a tight market like this the more likely scenario is that potential applicants are applying to numerous position and have the edge with what job they take, so being slow to make an offer might just lose you your dream hire.
This market has also made us work smarter when it comes to our Temporary Employment Services. In a job market moving this quick, we have a “Here Today, Gone to Maui” philosophy. We have a new Expert at Hire Standard Inc. I am so excited and pleased to announce that Mandy DeCecco-Kolebaba is joining our team as my business partner and Director of Operations.
Mandy came to Lethbridge from Calgary 12 years ago in pursuit of a Broadcast Journalism Degree from the Lethbridge College, which she obtained before advancing onto the University of Lethbridge where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.
Mandy and her husband Dean, also a Calgarian by birth, were hooked in by the family focused lifestyle that Lethbridge offered (and of course, the good Lethbridge folks they made friends with) and decided that this is where they would plant roots and start their careers and their family. Mandy recently became the happiest woman alive when she had her first child, Jack James – now a busy 9-month-old (and our Hire Standard mascot).
Mandy will bring a strategic focus, experience in staffing and operations management and a passion for life that’s contagious. If you have spent any time with her, you are likely to have noticed her energetic, fun and generous nature. We are ecstatic to have her steering our ship and we invite all past friends and business associates to contact her at Hire Standard to lean on her expertise or to discuss the future of your business, or ours.
