Question: Hey Rob!  my dog is shedding a lot lately and I was told that it could be due to the food I am feeding him.  Is there anything I can do to reduce the hair around the house?

Answer: There are many different ways to reduce shedding of both cats and dogs.  The information you heard about the food is correct although there are other variables.  Firstly, most dog and cat foods have omega 3 and 6 fatty acids but you have to look at where they are derived from.  Many companies used flax seed as an additive for this, but unfortunately these omegas are not readily assimilated by canines and felines.  The proper Omegas from fish such as salmon oil many times are added to pets food and can greatly reduce shedding.  If you choose that changing the food is not an option, one option you may choose is more regular brushing of your pet.  If you come into the store we carry a large selection of combs, brushes, rakes, shedding blades and grooming mitts.  Deciding on which product will work best for you is really dependent on the type of pet you have and their hair type.

In dealing with this shedding issue you have to also take a look at the seasonal factors.  During the winter months the air in our area becomes substantially drier.  Due to this low humidity the pet tends to have more dander (dry skin) and with that more hair loss.  The other options I gave will help with this although for this probable cause we have another option.  A product called a rehydrant spray is carried which is sprayed on the pet.  A light misting is usually sufficient.  Over the course of the day your pets skin and coat will absorb moisture out of the air to rehydrate itself.  Thus less hair is loss.

Thank-you for giving me an opportunity to answer your question and feel free to stop into Animal World and meet us directly.

Q: Hello Rob, My question pertains to my pond. I know it`s early but can I start my pond and filtration up yet? My fish are starting to come up to the surface.

A: This question is very dependant on the weather so I will do my best to explain the concerns and the issues. The fact it was a very mild winter and so far a mild spring actually is more difficult on your pond fish than if it were colder. The warmer the water temperature, the less oxygen the water retains. Additionally, warmer temperatures allow the organic waste in the pond to begin to decompose. The fish you have in your pond may actually be surfacing due to lack of air and not due to the fact that they are hungry.

This unusually warm weather does indicate we should look at beginning early spring clean-ups and clean-outs. You may want to start planning to re-hook up your pumps, waterfalls and filters. I would also consider a full or partial water change. Due to the frost time not allowing it, or perhaps your outside water is not running yet, you may not be able to complete those projects. At the very least I would suggest that you install a small air pump and airstone to generate an increased oxygen concentration. These air pumps are quite inexpensive and readily pay for themselves in fish health and pond cleanliness.

Now as the weather continues to warm and with it our pond water, we will consider feeding our pond fish. We suggest not feeding your Koi and goldfish at all until the pond temperature reaches 10oC or warmer. At these low temperatures you would generally feed a wheat germ based food for easy digestion.

I hope that helps to answer your question and we will see what weather the spring and summer blesses us with. If any further information is required, feel free to contact me at (403) 526-1199. I pride myself at being the leader in Koi Ponds and water gardens in Alberta.

Question: I recently moved into a new place there are pet stains on the carpet and now my own dog is making a mess in the house. What’s the best way to clean this up and stop my dogs behaviour?

Answer: Cleaning up pet urine stains is a very common question and honestly if the stain was the only probable it would be a very easy solution. Although there is a cornucopia of products and cleaners on the market that effectively remove stains, the odour and urine left in the underlay is really more the issue.

To clean up the colour and mess remaining under the surface we must use an enzyme or bacteria based product. The reason for this is the enzymes or bacteria go to work eating the mess. This allows you to pour the product on, leave it and come back later to dab up excess moisture.

These products, although very effective, I must remind you to pour enough on to reach where the urine and odour is.

When dealing with your own pet, marking over the old stains, this can be done to your dog/cat trying to mask the scent of the other pet with their own pheromone (scent of a hormone). A few different products we sell at Animal World also eradicate this odour which your pet can be attracted to and smell. Unfortunately, if your pet has been messing in a certain area of your house for an extended period of time, messing in this area may have become habitual. For them one of the best ways to deter this habit is to use a deterrent in the area to inhibit your pet from going into the area in the first place. Common belief is it takes 14-21 days to break a habit your pet has acquired.

I thank you very much for your question and feel free to call or come into the store if any other pet questions arise.

Sincerely Rob Andreas

January 2012 Article

Welcome to the world of water! We have over 100 varieties of aquatic life for you to choose from. From a single Goldfish or Beta fish in a simple bowl to a huge aquarium with plants, lights, and Stingrays aquatic environments are always a beautiful and interesting choice.

Most fresh-water fish take very little time to maintain, and you will find that a single fish in even a simple aquarium can make a very intriguing pet.

Fish are available in a myriad of sizes, colors and prices – finding one to suit you won’t be a problem.

There are a few things to consider when selecting and purchasing your fish. Your new pet will require a few things for a healthy and happy life. The selection of your bowl or aquarium is important as it should be appropriate to the size and type of fish you wish to own. Decorations for your bowl help to keep your fish occupied and content.

Water conditioning liquids or tablets are also very important. Certain chemicals are added to most drinking or tap water to help keep the water clean. These chemicals help keep us healthy but can be harmful or fatal to your fish. Water conditioners are added (usually only a drop or two is all it takes) to your fishbowl or aquarium to neutralize these chemicals and keep your fish healthy and safe.

Food is also available in a wide variety of forms. From flakes and pellets to dehydrated shrimp, we can assist you in selecting the perfect delectable for your new friend.

We look forward to meeting you!

Q. I recently set up a fish tank and after the first week the water went cloudy and I started losing my fish. What is the solution?

A. In regards to the question looking for the solution to your fish loss and cloudy water we must first look at the cause. Cloudy water generally occurs due to over feeding by the fish owner. In a newly set up aquarium this I quite common due to the water being “too clean” and free of the beneficial bacteria which breakdown the fish waste. The fish produce ammonia in their waste, this ammonia in an established aquarium is usually broken down naturally by nitrosomonas bacteria. The ammonia is both what causes the cloudy water as well burns the fish gills making it difficult for them to respirate resulting in stress then death.

So if ammonia is the cause lets examine the solution. First stop feeding for at least 3 to 4 days. You need to slow down the production of ammonia. The next step is At Animal World we have many product to assist in bring your aquarium to a “balance” as well. A few of these products are: Step 2 Aquarium Set-up Maintanance. This bottle contains millions of beneficial bacteria specifically designed to balance and create ideal living conditions for your tank in habitants. Another product to help with your success in fishkeeping is ammonia removing granules in your filter, which can assist in absorbing ammonia as it’s created.

I hope this helps produce a better fish keeping experience for you. As always feel free to contract us at the store or by phone. For every problem that can occur with aquarium I will be happy to explain the solution. Remember we do offer free water tests as well Justin case one of these problems arise. Thank you!

August 2011 Article

Hey Rob: I already know you are very handsome and sexy, but I’ve heard you know lots about water gardens. I’ve been having a problem with excessive green algae this year in my pond. Any advice you could give would be appreciated.

Algae problems in water gardens is one of the most common questions I’m asked about. Unfortunately you did not explain whether it was algae growing on the pond edge and around your plants or the type of algae which turns the pond water green. I will explain your best possible solutions for both of these problems. As well explain how and why algae grows in the first place.

The most regularly complained about algae is the single cell algae which causes green water. The microalgae I am speaking of is so fine it passes through most conventional filters. This algae is also so light it stays in suspension in the water column. Thus causing green water. One commonly used solutions is to add Green Water Clarifier or Clearfast into your pond. This product binds the cells of algae together causing them to be large enough to become trapped in your filter. Although this method of clarification is readily used it is not a long term solution to the problem.

A great longterm solution to green water is an Ultra Violet Sterilizer (U.V. Clarifier). U.V.’s kill the algae that pass through the unit. The popularity of this item is due to the fact that an Ultra Violet Sterilizer guarantees clear water in your water garden.

Now if string algae or “blanket weed” is the algae you are speaking of there are other solutions available to you. Our most popular product is Algae Blast which is a fish/plant safe oxidant. This product eats the algae on contact producing fast results. Unfortunately this product alone will not eradicate the algae long term due to the fact that the nutrients that first caused the algae are still in the pond. Another option to reduce algae is to use Pond Tint. This product times the pond water a light blue colour to hinder the availability of light to the algae attempting to grow below.

Other great solutions for blanket weed are available as well including Barley Straw Pellets, Algae Sludge Reducer, Pond Balance, Microbe Lift and Phosphate Control. These products although effective must be used earlier in the season than now to produce noticeable results.

I hope this answers your question! Feel Free to contact us at
