If this is your year, you are focused on getting ready for Graduation.
At Aesthetic Solutions we know one of the most important things you want to get ready – is your skin, and we can help.
What Causes Acne?
And more importantly, how do I get rid of it?
All types of acne — blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and cysts — develop when pores in our skin become clogged. The culprit is sebum [see-bum], an oil in our skin. Our bodies make more sebum when our hormones surge. This explains teen acne problems. This is also why women often breakout before their periods.
Getting Rid of Acne
Thanks to advances in medicine, virtually every case of acne can be controlled. Many people with mild acne can see clear skin with good skin care and acne products available without a prescription. However, this won’t control everyone’s acne. Sometimes acne control requires a doctors help. Treating acne can prevent additional breakouts and scars. It can improve a person’s quality of life. People living with acne can suffer from low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. When acne is under control, a person’s confidence grows. Anxiety and depression diminish.
Blu-light treatment for acne:
With all the hype, it may seem that light therapies are light-years ahead of other acne treatments. That’s not necessarily true. Blu-light can however be a great option as part of your acne care plan.
1. Blu-light therapy might be a part of an acne treatment plan. Rarely can a laser or light treatment alone clear acne. This type of treatment works best when used along with other acne treatment such as medicine applied to the skin.
2. Blu-light therapy may help when other acne treatment has not worked. Some patients who did not see clearer skin with strong acne medicine have seen results when a laser or light therapy was added to their treatment plan.
3. Most people see some clearing, but not 100% clearing. For example, people who receive blue light average 30% to 60% clearing after a series of treatments.
4. To get the best results, you need a series of treatments. For example, if blue light is an option, you may need to do treatments weekly, treatments are 30 minutes.
5. Good skin care helps deliver best results. To get the best results from acne medicine, you need to practice good skin care. This is true after laser or light treatment, too.
Myth #1: Acne is caused by poor hygiene. If you believe this myth, and wash your skin hard and frequently, you can actually make your acne worse. Acne is not caused by dirt or surface skin oils. Although excess oils, dead skin and a day’s accumulation of dust on the skin looks unsightly, they should not be removed by hand scrubbing. Vigorous washing and scrubbing will actually irritate the skin and make acne worse. The best approach to hygiene and acne: Gently wash your face twice a day with a mild soap cleanser that is targeted for acne, pat dry–and use an appropriate acne treatment toner.
Myth #2: Acne is caused by diet. Extensive scientific studies have not found a connection between diet and acne. In other words, food does not cause acne. Not chocolate. Not french fries. Not pizza. Nonetheless, some people notice that certain foods affect their acne. If that is the case, avoid those foods. Eating a balanced diet always makes sense. Scientific evidence shows that if acne is being treated properly, and you generally keep a healthy diet, there’s no need to worry about food affecting the acne.
Myth #3: Acne is just a cosmetic disease. Yes, acne does affect the way people look and is not otherwise a serious threat to a person’s physical health. However, acne can result in permanent physical scars and emotional scars. Acne itself scars the way people feel about themselves to the point of affecting their lives.
Myth #4: You just have to let acne run its course. The truth is, acne can be cleared up. With the products available today, there is no reason why someone has to endure acne or get acne scars. We highly recommend the Skin TX, and Vivier products. If you aren’t sure about what is the best one for you, we are more than happy to help. Consultations are always free, and provide great advice on what may be the best plan of action for you, with the help of a doctor.
Acne Skin Care Taboos
There are some basic rules to follow!
1. Astringents, masks, toners, and exfoliators that contain scrubbing particles
Unless one of these products contains an ingredient used to treat acne, such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, these products do not help clear acne. In fact, these products tend to irritate the skin and make acne worse. These products also may make it more difficult to tolerate prescription acne medications.
2. Greasy hair-care products
These hair-care products, such as pomades and oil-containing gels, can drip onto the skin and clog pores. This can cause acne.
3. Picking, popping, and squeezing acne
People pick and pop pimples to get rid of them quickly. The truth is doing any of these can irritate the skin and make acne worse. These also prolong healing time and increase the risk of scarring.
4. Skin care products that contain oil
Many skin care products from makeup to sunscreen contain oil. Oil can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Look for products that say “oil-free,” “will not clog pores” or “noncomedogenic.” It is important to use quality products. Be it cleansers and toners, or makeup. There are excellent make up options out there. At Aesthetic Solutions we love the Glo Mineral make up line. It’s wonderful to use makeup that is actually good for your skin!
5. Rubbing alcohol
Some people apply rubbing alcohol in order to dry out the oily skin. This will not help clear acne nor prevent breakouts. In fact, it can irritate the skin and cause breakouts. When you “dry out” your skin, it is natural for the skin to try to counteract the dryness by producing more oils.
6. Tanning
Some people claim that their acne clears with sun exposure. The truth is tanning can be very damaging to the skin. If you are using a retinoid that you apply to your skin to treat acne, you must:
• Protect your skin from the sun
• DO NOT use a tanning bed or sun lamp
Is it okay to get a spray-on tan while being treated for acne?
If you like the look of a tan, dermatologists recommend using a self-tanning product. Here are some tips to help you choose a self-tanning product:
• To avoid breakouts, look for a self-tanner that will not clog your pores. The label may read, “won’t clog pores,” “oil free,” or “noncomedogenic.” It all means the same thing.
• When applying a self-tanner to the face, be sure to use a product that is designed specifically for the face.
• It can be difficult to get an even color on the skin surrounding acne. The skin here tends to be a darker color, so be careful not to apply too much.
• Don’t forget your sunscreen. Using a self-tanner does not protect your skin from the sun, so daily sunscreen use is essential. Vivier SPF 30 is wonderful, and will not clog pores. The light feel on the skin is perfect for daily protection.
Why are we taking the time to talk about self tanners, well trying to clear your acne by getting a tan may not be as safe as you think. The latest research shows that people who use tanning beds and sunlamps before 35 years of age increase their risk of getting melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer, by 75%. Yes, that is 75%. Melanoma is showing up in teenagers.
Safer, effective acne treatment exists. Today, it is possible to successfully treat virtually every case of acne. For most people with mild acne, good skin care and acne products available without a prescription can quickly and efficiently lead to clearer skin. Stubborn acne may require a little more help, and that is why it is important to see a Doctor. Luckily, at Aesthetic Solutions this can all be done in one appointment.
Superficial Chemical Peels and Facials are a great way to help skin look great quickly. With little or no down time, and essential nourishment to bring out the best in your skin.
April 2012 Article
Acne – Acne is the most common skin condition in humans. Acne develops where there are more oil glands present, e.g. face, chest, back and neck. There are many different types of acne and each patient should be treated according to their particular case.
Cleansing the skin more than the recommended twice daily and/or using harsh soaps can actually cause the skin to produce more oil. The skin is programmed to keep itself balanced so when the beneficial natural oils are stripped, its response is to create more oil to compensate. Patients with oilier skin should cleanse with a non-soap cleanser twice a day followed with an antibacterial hydrator both day and night.
At Aesthetic Solutions we recommend Vivier Lexxel Moisturiser for Redness Relief and Antibacterial hydration. The application of the correct moisturizer will also help to regulate the amount of oil produced throughout the day.
Peels can improve acneic, break out prone skin through their anti inflammatory, antioxidant and exfoliating properties. They clear blocked follicles and remove dead surface cells to promote healthy skin.
Aging – Aging of the skin is a result of many different factors that can be broken into two categories: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic or uncontrollable aging is chronological and genetic. Facial wrinkling, expression lines and drier, more sensitive skin may be a result of intrinsic aging. The extrinsic or more controllable factors of aging refer to exposure to the sun and/or pollutants which cause a breakdown of the skin’s structure, leading to discoloration, wrinkles, skin growths and even cancer. Many skin specialists believe the extrinsic factors are to blame for 90% of the visible signs of aging. When attempting to correct signs of aging, it is important to use products that not only treat, but also prevent future damage from occurring.
Aesthetic Solutions has been helping clients to minimise the effects of aging skin for more than three years now. By helping you to choose the best skin care options for your personal situation, advising clients on treatments and peels that can greatly improve sluggish, dull complexion, bringing new brightness and freshness to the skin. Our Anti aging peel is full of amazing ingredients that help to tighten, Hydrate, Stimulate Collagen, and Inhibit Melanogenesis, and reduce the results of years of sun exposure.
Rosacea – Rosacea is a somewhat misunderstood skin condition. Currently, there is no known cure or cause. Rosacea is generally characterized by persistent redness and/or breakouts on the central areas of the face, commonly affecting the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin. Although there is no cure, there are many different methods of controlling rosacea symptoms. There are medical therapies that work well in conjunction with cosmeceuticals and professional treatments to control rosacea symptoms. Dr. Swarts and Dr. Badenhorst can be consulted during most consultation appointments, for a diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
Aesthetic Solutions recommends a variety of treatments that really do help to control rosacea. Our new V-Beam laser is proving to be an amazing help to rosacea sufferers. Skin Care, and Peels that are specifically targeted for rosacea are also showing remarkable results.
Melasma - (also commonly called pregnancy mask) is a dark skin discoloration that appears on sun-exposed areas of the face. Melasma is a very common skin disorder. Though it can affect anyone, young women with brownish skin tones are at greatest risk. It is often associated with the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. It is especially common in pregnant women, women who are taking birth control pills (oral contraceptives) and women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause. Sun exposure is a strong risk factor for melasma. Melasma doesn’t cause any other symptoms besides skin discoloration but may be of great cosmetic concern. A uniform brown color is usually seen over the cheeks, forehead, nose, or upper lip. It is most often symmetrical (matching on both sides of the face).
At Aesthetic Solutions Dr. Badenhorst and Dr. Swarts can diagnose melasma based upon the appearance of your skin. Our professional team at Aesthetic Solutions recommend melasma suited chemical peels. We are so pleased with the results of our peel specifically targeting Melasma, likely due to the fact that our formulation contains, kojic acid, to help reduce pigmentation, and azelaic acid which leads to brighter skin.
Light to more extensive chemical peels are done in our medical office. There is minimal discomfort so no anesthetic is given because the patient feels only a slight stinging when the solution is applied. With the use of a “cooler” cool air is blown on the skin while the peel is being administered. No pain killer is needed. Medium peels like TCA are also performed in the Aesthetic Solutions doctor’s office and are a bit more uncomfortable. The patient usually feels a warm or burning sensation that is made most tolerable with the use of the “cooler”.
Now your question might be “What makes Aesthetic Solutions Chemical Peels different from any other?” The answer is that we believe there is no one chemical peel that is right for every skin type and every skin concern. However by addressing your personal needs and concerns we are confident that we have a chemical peel formulation that is perfect for you.

TMJ pain is at times unbearable, disabling and very real – Receive Safe and Effective Botox Treatments to relieve TMJ at Aesthetic Solutions with Dr. P.J.E. Swarts.
Botox® treatments for TMJ Treatments is a simple, non-surgical procedure where the Botox is injected into certain muscles in the head and jaw area in order for them to be relaxed.
How TMJ Treatment with Botox is Performed:
At Aesthetic Solutions it is important to us that you are well informed and making a decision without pressure. This is just one of the reasons that we always do a complimentary consultation before first treatment. During your consultation a trained professional will explain the procedure and how it works, answer any questions that you might have, and then help you to book your appointment with the Dr. if this is what you wish to do.
Dr. Swarts will also step in during the consultation and may have you contract the muscle area to be treated so he can determine appropriate injection sites.
On the day of your injection appointment The targeted areas for the Botox treatment may be numbed with an ice pack. Then, the doctor will administer several tiny Botox® injections directly into the muscle. The botox will enable the muscles that tightly contract to relax, thus allowing for relief of clenching and tension headache due to jaw stress.
What Areas will be Affected by TMJ Botox Therapy?
Only the areas injected with Botox will be “relaxed.” Botox treatment for TJM therapy will not affect anywhere else in your body. The injections are mainly in the temporalis, frontalis and masseter. Additional sites may be injected with Botox depending on the severity of the headaches. The length of the Botox treatment procedure depends on the number of injections needed as determined by the doctor. Still, it is reasonable for the treatment procedure to be completed within 30 minutes.
Because the Botox treatment procedure is non-surgical and done in the office, there is no hospital stay required, and Botox® Treatment will not limit your driving ability, so you need not worry about having a driver help you the day of your injections.
More importantly to most is the fact that the pain associated with the Botox TMJ treatment is generally minimal and brief. Some patients have likened the Botox injection pain to a “bug bite” or “prick”. Pain from the injection can be reduced by numbing proposed injection sites with a cold pack.
After the Botox TMJ Treatment muscle tenderness will start to disappear almost immediately.
What is the Recovery from Botox Therapy for TMJ Treatment Like?
Because the Botox Treatment procedure is non-surgical and non-invasive, it is highly likely that the patient can return to normal activities immediately. However, to avoid spreading the toxin to other muscles, patients should not rub or massage the area injected with Botox and remain upright for many hours. Physical activity should also be limited for a time.
Risks, Limitations & Possible Complications of Botox Injections for TMJ Treatment
As with any medical procedure there are possible risks and side effects when using Botox for TMJ treatment. Since this is a non-surgical treatment procedure, the risks and possible complications are infrequent, minimal and temporary.
If you still have questions or concerns regarding Botox for TMJ, please call and book your complimentary consultation, or ask your Dentist if Botox for TMJ might be just the relief you have been waiting for! We can help. Call 403 346 3376, that’s 403 346 DERM.

Perfecta can do it all; from treating challenging vascular lesions like PWS, Telangiectasia and diffuse redness to eliminating epidermal pigmented lesions like age spots, to treating periorbital wrinkles – and do it all Purpura Free!
Dr. Badenhorst and Dr. Swarts find that it effectively and efficiently treat a variety of concerns, including rosacia, cherry angioma, pigmented lesions, stretch marks, scars, spider veins, periorbitsl wrinkles, even port wine stain and birthmarks.
This new technology is unlike any other, and only at Aesthetic Solutions, with Dr. J.S. Badenhorst and Dr. P.J.E. Swarts.
Who Is It For:
The Vbeam Perfecta laser is considered to be the gold standard for the treatment of vascular conditions such as broken capillaries, diffuse redness, dilated facial veins, rosacea, and angiomas. In addition, the Vbeam Perfecta can be used to treat pigmented lesions such as age spots and sun spots (medically called lentigenes). Brown spot treatment with the Vbeam Perfecta laser is of benefit not only in Caucasian patients but also in patients who have more pigment in their skin, such as in Asian patients.
The Vbeam Perfecta laser represents a significant enhancement in laser technology over the earlier generations of blood vessel lasers. Vbeam Perfecta treatments are so gentle that they can usually be performed without any numbing and can be easily planned to have little or no recovery down time.
Advances in the laser technology also allow the Vbeam Perfecta laser to be used to treat leg veins! In our office, we can combine Vbeam Perfecta laser treatment with sclerotherapy to treat and improve unsightly leg veins.
How It Works
In order to improve redness, broken capillaries, and leg veins, the Vbeam Perfecta laser fires laser light that is selectively absorbed by the red color of blood. When this occurs, the blood is selectively heated. This heating action also heats the blood vessel wall. This results in a narrowing down of the diameter of the blood vessel wall, and a marked reduction in redness. Usually, three to five laser treatments at monthly intervals are required in order to optimally treat redness, broken capillaries, and leg veins.
When the Vbeam Perfecta laser is used to treat brown spots, a special hand piece is used to temporarily squeeze the red blood out of the skin, leaving only the brown pigment in the spot to absorb the laser light. When the brown pigment absorbs the laser light, it begins the process of breaking down the brown pigment, resulting in a lightening of the brown spot.
Results:
When the Vbeam Perfecta is used to treat vascular conditions, it results in reduced redness and a reduction in the number of broken capillaries. In many cases, broken capillaries are completely eliminated. Redness is significantly reduced after Vbeam Perfecta treatment. In addition, rosacea is easily controlled in nearly all cases with the Vbeam Perfecta laser!
When the Vbeam Perfecta is used to treat brown spots, it results in a lightening or a complete elimination of the brown spot.
Treatments with the Vbeam Perfecta laser generally have no recovery down time, allowing patients to resume their normal activities immediately after leaving the office. If you have redness, rosacea, or brown spots in your skin, we invite you to come in and remove these unsightly discolorations. Your skin will be clearer and fresher and you will feel fantastic!

The Elite
An increasing number of Canadians are willing to use any means necessary to rid themselves of unwanted body and facial hair. Shaving, waxing, plucking, and electrolysis have all been used by men and women to solve this cosmetic conundrum. Eager to solve this widespread problem, The laser industry has been busy exploring high-tech paths to develop a better, more lasting method of hair removal. It is important to keep in mind that all hair laser is not the same. At Aesthetic Solutions we use the Elite system because we know it to be one of the best medical laser available in Canada. Although lasers like the IPL will work for hair laser, it is a much inferior laser and therefore more treatment are needed for the same result.
The revolutionary Cynosure Elite aesthetic laser is a comprehensive hair removal system, reducing unwanted hair and maintaining client satisfaction. This innovative new laser combines two different laser wavelengths in one system, allowing technicians to target and remove on most types of hair, on any part of the body.
Who are Candidates for Laser Hair Removal?
Almost everyone can receive laser treatment, although some people will have better results than during evaluation. The best results occur on people with light skin and dark hair, whereas, good results are difficult to achieve on blonde hair, and on people with dark, or tanned, skin. Through more extensive treatments, however, darker skinned people can achieve a desirable result. If your naturally light skin is very tanned, appointments can be made for the winter, when skin has returned to its natural shade. The darkness of the hair is optimal as the laser targets the darkest part of the root. Unfortunately this means that grey or white hair are excluded from the targeting.
Is it Painful?
Most patients describe the experience as a series of pinpricks or sparks on the skin. It has often been described as a sharp snap of a rubber band with heat, and the feeling is gone a quickly as it comes. Anesthesia is not usually required, although it is always available at Aesthetic Solutions. About 30 minutes after the treatment the area will turn red or pink. This may last for a few hours to one day, however it is not permanent and will disappear in a short time.
How Many Treatments are Required?
The laser best affects hair when it is in the early growth phase. The laser will destroy follicles that are producing hair at the time of treatment. At the same time, some follicles are dormant, not producing any hair. Repeated sessions are necessary to destroy these follicles. Because of this biological cycle, about 6 to 10 treatments are usually required to fully target all the follicles completely.

December 2011 Article
Every year, around the Christmas Season we find ourselves wishing we were just a size or two smaller.
Most of us have tried just about everything, and the weight seems to always come back. But over time we are learning.
We know that Fad diets don’t work. We know that no matter how much lemonade and syrup we drink, we are still hungry.
We know that just cutting back the calories is not putting our bottoms back where we know they should be.
What many of us don’t know is, What does work!
At Aesthetic Solutions Dr. J.S. Badenhorst and Dr. P.J.E. Swarts have developed an an amazing plan that is changing lives. This is a gradual, step by step, scientifically based way to begin to lose a reasonable amount of weight each week. It’s about changing a lifetime of habits that contribute to weight gain.
When asked Why it was important to him to bring the program to Red Deer, Dr. Badenhorst said;
“The North American lifestyle lends itself to a hectic pace, with a high consumption of fast food and little or no time for physical exercise.
The result is an alarming incident of obesity, leading to numerous health hazards such as Diabetes and Heart diseases. We must address this pandemic if we wish to stop the increased motality rate due to obesity.”
One of the biggest problems with diet plans is that one must starve themselves to make a noticable difference in the morning scale reading. The Wight Doctors know that if you do that, the weight loss will not last. It is simply not reasonable to say a person should drop the weight by choosing a 500 calorie per day plan. So the Dr.’s have developed a program that, depending on your body type, consists of 1200 – 1500 calories per day. When combined with Vitamin B6 and B12 injections for added energy, a daily physical activity routine, and HCG and DHEA burning the fat stores while preserving muscle mass as well as helping to curb appetite.
Why does Dr. Swarts believe in the Weight Dr.’s Program?
“Weight Dr.’s is an investment in your health and your future. You will have access to a physician supervised diet program, ongoing monitering, long term weight loss cream, and the support to help you get real and lasting results.”
Finally, the program is uniquely designed to address all the reasons why it’s so hard to lose weight. Other diets might claim to have a personal coach that helps, but with Aesthetic Solutions you have two doctors and an entire staff to support you in your weight loss journey. The Weight Dr. Program users on average are losing 2 – 5 pounds per week, and are not just keeping it off, but have continued to live healthier, happier lives.

Botox is for more than cosmetics
BOTOX and Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis is more commonly known as excessive sweating. It is believed that approximately 3% of the world’s population suffer from this condition. Hyperhidrosis occurs when the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls body temperature, overacts and signals eccrine sweat glands to start working. A problem with the sympathetic nervous system which connects the hypothalamus to the sweat glands may also be at fault.
It is unknown what causes hyperhidrosis, however bouts may be triggered by a variety of things such as exercise, spicy food, and anxiety.
If an individual suffers from hyperhidrosis and it is not the result of another medical condition or medication, then it is known as primary focal. This means that the medical condition is hyperhidrosis, and it is not a side effect of something else. Generally, the condition develops at an early age and lasts for life.
Those with primary focal hyperhidrosis experience excessive sweating on certain parts of the body, such as the face, hands, feet and underarms – areas that normally have a high concentration of sweat glands. If one side of the body is affected, then in most cases the other side is affected as well, making it symmetrical. Bouts do not typically during sleep.
BOTOX® is approved by both Health Canada and the FDA as a treatment for severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis. In other words, those who suffer from a severe case of primary focal hyperhidrosis of the underarms may have their condition effectively treated with BOTOX®.
How It Works
BOTOX® treats severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis by blocking the stimulation of the nervous system connected to the sweat glands located in the armpits. A noticeable reduction in the amount of sweat produced in the underarms occurs in the days following the first treatment, and may take up to a month. Followup treatments may be scheduled if a significant reduction in sweating does not result. Results generally last for about 4-6 months.
Botox for Migraine and Tension Headache
Today, most of us are familiar with the varied benefits of BOTOX through reported medical studies, celebrity gossip mags, and news articles. Even though most of us know of BOTOX® Cosmetic as the top wrinkle treatment in the cosmetic industry, Botox injections are also recognized as valuable solutions for everything from excessive sweating to voice therapy. For constant sufferers of the severe headaches known as migraines, Botox injections are becoming well-known as a successful treatment.
In 2003, the World Health Organization estimated that as many as 303 million people worldwide suffer from migraines. With the prevalence and frequency of these debilitating headaches and the noted relief Botox injections often provide, many migraine clinics and plastic surgeons now offer Botox as a headache treatment. However, this was not always the case. Botox injections for chronic migraines were discovered accidentally during clinical testing for BOTOX® Cosmetic. When test patients who normally suffered from headaches reported fewer facial lines and fewer migraines, Botox began its progression from popular cosmetic treatment to medical remedy.
How It Works
During a Botox migraine treatment, doctors make an injection into the forehead, neck, and shoulders where patients are experiencing pain and tension. The botulinum toxin is thought to eliminate migraines by reducing muscle tension and thus creating less strain on the nervous system. Not only can decreasing stress on the nervous system prevent migraines from developing, headaches that do occur are often less severe because Botox purportedly blocks pain receptors in nerve cells.
